Brackley Sea Cadets Waterborne Funding
Awarded: £9,964

Region: Central

Brackley Sea Cadets is a registered charity located in Brackley, Northamptonshire.

The project has provided water sports equipment for the Sea Cadets to increase their access to kayaks, canoes and sailing. This has enabled them to offer increased activities for young adults which would not otherwise be available. The project has contributed towards improving the cadets’ health and wellbeing through exercise and access to open outdoor space at Grebe Lake. It has also enabled Brackley Sea Cadets to deliver core training activities which have increased education and boating qualifications for young adults.

Over the course of the project, the cadet numbers have grown. This is a result of young adults in the community seeing the opportunities on offer. They have offered qualifications for cadets in kayaking and canoeing, with some cadets advancing towards obtaining British Canoeing Pathways and Royal Yaghting Association certifications. In the next boating season and beyond, they will continue to provide opportunities for young adults to further their extra-curricular education in boating.

Opportunities for other local groups and the wider community

The equipment has also been available for use by other local groups including Scouts, Girl Guides, and youth groups. This has encouraged young adults who aren’t involved with the cadets to take part in water sports activities, education and training. Additionally, they have offered opportunities for young people from the wider community to go out on the water through special events they have held for the Kings Coronation and Armed Forces Day. The project has brought together people of different backgrounds, ethnicities and nationalities in a common purpose. It has also contributed to them realising a sense of achievement and personal development, and a keenness to pass those experiences onto others in the community.

“Brackley Sea Cadets applied to HS2 funding for the purchase of water-based sports equipment for the benefit of young adults in our local area. Brackley Sea Cadets as a small unit didn’t have the resources to purchase the equipment and provide opportunities for sailing or kayaking or canoeing.

“The HS2 funds has enabled Brackley Sea Cadets to deliver on our promises to provide to the local community boating opportunities and access to open spaces. The young adults who have been able to partake in boating activities have benefitted greatly, achieving British Canoeing and Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualifications. HS2 has enabled us to inspire and encourage young adults to explore and expand their horizons.”
