Redeveloping Lichfield Public Access Courts (Tennis and Netball)
Awarded: £62,000
Region: Central
Beacon Park Tennis is a registered charity located in Lichfield, Staffordshire.
The project has refurbished four public access tennis and netball courts within the historic Beacon Park in Lichfield city centre. This has involved the realignment of the courts to meet Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) standards, as well as new fencing, nets and markings painted for both tennis and netball. Floodlights have been installed to increase the usage of the courts during the evenings and there is also a new electronic locking mechanism and online booking system to allow users to access the facilities.
The courts are open for use by the public, local schools and a netball club, as well as for tennis coaching sessions and summer tennis camps. The courts have been well used, particularly by families who are using the courts to exercise together, and the tennis coaching sessions and summer camps have been well attended.
“Beacon Park Tennis was created to preserve a beautiful facility located in Beacon Park in the heart of Lichfield. We were keen to create a lasting benefit to our community by providing a low-cost, high-quality place for people to play tennis and netball.
“We started with no funding but lots of passion and determination to make a difference. With the support of our local community, we teamed up with HS2 and other partners including Sport England, the LTA, Lichfield Spires Netball Club and Lichfield District Council.
“Together we were able to completely refurbish the facility and provide a place where people can exercise safely, without the support, we would not have been able to complete our project.”
